Notes from the Portuguese Press

Today in the Portuguese newspaper, O Primeiro de Janeiro, 55% of respondents in an online poll pick Portugal to win the World Cup. Also in O Primeiro de Janeiro, Deco says he's not sure if he'd "pay to watch England play." Well, you don't have to buddy; enjoy your seat on the sideline.

I'm a devout England supporter yet I still can't help feeling for the Spanish (except of course when they beat England in an international game).

What is it with Spain? They play such good football and, at club level, are extremely powerful in Europe. Yet, whenever the national team play, they just don't seem to gel.

Maybe I'm sympathetic because their international performance is not unlike England's! :-)

You're absolutely right about Spain being reminiscent of England!

One hypothesis I've seen is that the number of autonomous communities in Spain (Valencia, Catalonia, Madrid, etc.) has produced a nation in which the people feel more allegiance to their own region than to the nation as a whole. Maybe this translates to the team? Who knows? Regardless, their World Cup record is really counterintuitive, at least from a football perspective.
